A panel discussion with their Honours Judge von Keisenberg, Judge Sellars QC and Judge Lummis
AWLA invites you to a panel discussion with three recently appointed District Court Judges: Judge von Keisenberg, Judge Sellars QC and Judge Lummis. Their Honours will reflect on their journey to the bench, the transition from practice to the judiciary, and their experiences so far.
Her Honour Judge von Keisenberg
Judge von Keisenberg was sworn in as a District Court Judge with Family Court jurisdiction in March 2020. Her Honour is of Samoan descent and for the 25 years preceding her appointment specialised primarily in the area of family law. Judge von Keisenberg practiced at the independent bar since 2000 and was the founding member of Wyndham Chambers. Her Honour is a former chair of the Deportation Review Tribunal (2003-06) and deputy member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal (since 2011). Her Honour was also the chair of the Family Courts Association for several years and is President of the Medico-Legal Society.
Her Honour Judge Sellars QC
Judge Sellars QC was sworn in as a District Court Judge with jury jurisdiction in February 2021. Her Honour was admitted in 1994 and identifies as NZ Maori/NZ European/Vietnamese with Iwi affiliations to Ngai Te Rangi and Ngai Tukuirangi. Her Honour’s first legal role was as a law clerk in Paris briefly in 1993, and then as a junior barrister in New Zealand with Michael Harte before joining Russell McVeagh from 1996 to 2002. Judge Sellars QC joined the Public Defence Service in 2004 and, in 2009, Her Honour established herself as a barrister.
Her Honour Judge Lummis
Judge Lummis was sworn in as a District Court Judge with jury jurisdiction in April 2021. Her Honour’s first role was with Govett Quilliam in New Plymouth in the litigation team. Following that, Judge Lummis spent almost four years working in London in a range of roles for local authorities before returning to New Zealand, taking up a role with Meredith Connell in Auckland as a Crown Prosecutor. Her Honour joined the partnership at Meredith Connell in 2014.
