Auckland Women Lawyers’ Association is delighted to join with NZ Bar Association | Ngā Ahorangi Motuhake o te Ture to present a panel discussion on ‘Women at the Bar’.
Come along to Bankside Chambers in Auckland Central on 25 May 2023 to hear Maria Dew KC, Julie-Anne Kincade KC, Kellie Arthur and Anjeet Singh talk about life as a barrister.
Maria, Julie-Anne, Kellie, and Anjeet are from different backgrounds, practice in different areas of law and have taken different paths to the Independent bar. Their varied perspectives on life at the bar promises to be insightful and inspiring. If you are considering a move to the independent bar, this is your chance to ask questions of our presenters.
This is a free event for members of NZBA or AWLA. The cost for non-members is $25. All genders are welcome to attend this event.
Registration is required and tickets are limited so please register early to avoid disappointment.
Presentations begin at 6.00pm and will be followed by networking drinks and canapes.

Our presenters:
Maria Dew KC
Maria Dew KC has a specialist practice in employment law, professional misconduct and related civil litigation. Maria went to the bar in 2000 and was appointed Queens Counsel in 2018.
Her practice also includes regular appointments to conduct independent investigations and reviews both in the public and private sector.
Currently, Maria holds various appointments including as President of the NZBA and Deputy Chair of the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal, New Zealand Law Society Prosecutions Panel, Sports and Recreation Complaints Service Panel Member and AMINZ certified mediator.
Maria is a member of Britomart Chambers, Auckland.

Julie-Anne Kincade KC
Julie-Anne was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1991. She worked as a criminal barrister in London until December 2005, prosecuting and defending all levels and types of serious criminal cases. When she moved to New Zealand she was employed by Meredith Connell as a Senior Solicitor from 2007 to 2013.She joined the independent bar in November 2013, She has been a member of Blackstone Chambers in Auckland February 2016. She was appointed as Queen’s Counsel at the end of 2019.
She is on the Panel to prosecute for Kayes Fletcher Walker and the Serious Fraud Office. She has been a Faculty member of the Litigation Skills course since 2015.
She is on the Council of the Auckland District Law Society (ADLS) as well as being a member of the Criminal Law Committee of ADLS.

Kellie Arthur (Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Pākehā)
Kellie practices civil and commercial litigation and is a member of FortyEight Shortland Barristers in Auckland. Kellie joined the independent bar in March 2018 after seven years in the Litigation team at Chapman Tripp.
She has appeared in significant domestic and international commercial arbitrations, the Court of Appeal and the High Court.
Law is Kellie’s second career. She had nine years’ commercial experience in New Zealand and London before retraining as a lawyer in her mid-30’s.
Kellie is a council member of NZBA | Ngā Ahorangi Motuhake o te Ture and former Vice-President of Auckland Women Lawyers’ Association.

Anjeet Singh
Anj is a senior criminal defence lawyer practicing in Manukau. She has over 20 years’ legal experience and specialises in all areas of criminal law and traffic law.
Anj graduated with a conjoint degree in Commerce and Law (Honours) from the University of Auckland. She was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 2002
Anj hails from the beautiful Islands of Fiji and is immensely proud of her Indian ancestry.
Anj is a member of the Auckland Women Lawyers’ Association committee.
