AWLA addressed ongoing gender disparities in the legal profession in a NZ Herald article. AWLA President, Lady Deborah Chambers KC highlighted that, despite equal representation in law schools and increased hiring by major firms, women struggled to attain partnership positions. She cited several factors contributing to this issue, including family planning choices, societal perceptions of authority, and a lack of mentorship for women.
In response, AWLA had established a mentoring program and advocated for government contracts to be awarded only to firms committed to equal employment opportunities, aiming to enhance support and representation for women in law.
