Representation of women in Chambers listings

It was with great disappointment and frustration that we read the 2020 Chambers and Partners listings for the NZ bar. Despite many strong and successful women barristers in New Zealand, the Chambers listing features predominantly men, with only three women on the full list.

We think that is unacceptable, and in no way a fair reflection of the true make up and strength of the NZ bar.

We have written to Chambers to express our disappointment – you can read our letter below.

In that letter, we encourage women to put themselves forward for listing in Chambers this year. Please contact us if we can help with that in any way.

We also ask men at the bar to consider how they can redress this unfair listing. We ask you to use your submission to highlight the women who you consider should be listed this year.

Chambers has asked to have a call with us to discuss how it can improve the listing of women this year. If you have any ideas or practical suggestions that you think Chambers should be implementing, please contact Laura Carter at president@awla.nz, before 30 March.
